Project Description

Dr Yves Gingras is Professor at the History Department of UQAM and holds the Canada Research Chair in History and Social Sciences. After a Master Degree in Physics from Laval University, he obtained a Doctorate in History and Sociopolitical Sciences at the University of Montreal in 1984 then engaged into post doctoral studies, up to 1986, at the Department of the History of Sciences at Harvard University. This stay in the United States was to be followed, in 2000, by another one at the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology affiliated to the Massachusetts Institute for Technology as a Dibner Fellow. He has been regularly invited as visiting professor in France at the CNRS, l’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Louis-Pasteur University in Strasbourg, Toulouse-Le Mirail, and Provence University (Aix-Marseille 1) as well as at the University of Toronto.

His most recent publications include: Bibliomerics and Research Evaluation: Uses and Abuses, (Boston, MIT Press, 2016), L’Impossible dialogue: Sciences et religions (Montréal, Paris, Boréal et PUF, 2016), Sociologie des sciences (Paris: Presses universitaires de France, 2e edition, 2017). He has equally supervised the collective work: Controverses: accords et désaccords en sciences humaines et socials, (Paris, CNRS Éditions, 2014).

Dr Gingras has been awarded many prestigious prizes that testify to his excellent achievements, and mainly: the Ivan Slade Prize, which crowns the best critical contribution in the history of science for his essay «The Social and Epistemological Consequences of the Mathematization of Physics», awarded to him in 2001 by the British Society for the History of Science; the Gérard-Parizeau award in 2005 “in recognition of his outstanding work and his social commitment in the opening up of the vast and uneasy field of the history of science”. In 2007, the Association Francophone pour le Savoir awarded him its Jacques Rousseau Prize as a “scientific researcher whose achievements went way beyond the boundaries of his discipline and who established innovating bridges between different disciplines”.
